Diego Alanis: Pre-Departure Blog

Hi guys! My name is Diego Alanis, I am a Nursing Major with a minor in Spanish for Health Professions here at TCU, and I am so excited to Study Abroad this semester in Seville!

I chose to study abroad this semester for several reasons. The first reason was because I believe worldwide cultural immersion is extremely important for Healthcare professionals. Fort Worth is one of America’s fastest-growing cities, and with that comes people from various cultures and backgrounds moving in. As a result, I believe it is only fair for me to be aware of the different cultures and ways of living found all across the globe. This way, when I see patients of diverse cultures, I will know how to care for them despite our cultural differences. By immersing myself in Spanish culture, I will have a better understanding of different cultural norms and lifestyles. In the long run, for my nursing career, this will help me easily adapt to and broaden my perspective of different unique cultures all across the world. With this, I will be able to establish and ensure that my patients receive the best communication, trust, empathy, and care that they deserve, all in hopes of a fast and well-rounded recovery.

I also chose to study abroad because I am from Fort Worth. Moving to a different city/state for college is usually part of most people’s college experience; however, that was not the case for me. I was born and raised in Fort Worth, and so when I “moved away” for college, I didn’t really move too far away from my actual home. My brother moved all the way to Boston for college, and seeing him do so always made me want to move away for college as well. Studying abroad in Seville this semester is finally going to make this possible for me!

There are many things I am looking forward to this semester in Spain. I am excited to travel within Spain/Europe. I love exploring new places and seeing how much different they are than what I am used to. I am excited to see new and different architecture. I am excited to try new foods such as paella or tortilla de patatas. And most of all, I am excited to meet new people. I know a lot of people who study abroad tend to go alone, and I think this is an amazing opportunity to build great and unique relationships with people I’ve never met before. I truly believe studying abroad in college is a once in a lifetime oppurtunity that nothing else could ever compare to. I am so excited to go to Spain and have you guys join me!
