Advising Students

Participation in study abroad has grown tremendously in recent years, thanks in large part to TCU faculty and staff who engage students in conversation about study abroad and assist them in the pre-departure process. We do not expect faculty and staff to become experts in our programming. Feel free to direct students to our office or call us with your own questions at any time.

Where TCU Students Can (and Cannot) Study Abroad

TCU offers select study abroad programs around the world. Some programs are run by TCU while others are run by our approved partners. For a full list of our 150+ programs, use the Program Search. Most of our programs are general, rather than major specific, so students typically have a wide variety of program options.

TCU does not endorse study abroad programs outside of the TCU or Partner Programs, but students can petition to participate in highly prestigious programs like the London School of Economics. Please don’t recommend outside vendors for volunteering, interning, or studying abroad. If a program appears to be endorsed by a faculty or staff member, dean’s approval is required.

How Credit Works

Students on all of our programs (including the Partner Programs) receive TCU credit, not transfer credit. Grades count towards the TCU GPA and classes count as major, minor, core, or elective credit.

Students participating in a semester or partner program must have their classes pre-approved during the application process. In most cases, we look for types of credit rather than specific equivalencies to TCU classes. Major and minor credits are approved by the department and core credits are approved by Susan Layne. All credits (including any electives) are then approved and finalized by the dean’s office.

For more detail on the type of credit students can find abroad, visit Exploring Programs. You can also watch a video tutorial on how to complete the Study Abroad Credit Approval Form, required for all semester and partner program students.
