INITIAL CONSIDERATIONS

• In what geographic region, country, or city do you want to study?
• What is your foreign language ability?
• How long do you want to study abroad, and when do you want to begin?
• Do you have enough money to pay for the study abroad experience?
• Do you need financial assistance to carry out your plans?
• Do you already qualify for financial aid?

ACADEMIC CONSIDERATIONS

• What course of subjects would you like to study?
• How important is it to you to receive academic credit?
• Do you want to take classes in English or the local language?
• Do you have specific degree requirements which you need to fulfill while abroad?
• What do your department advisors think of your plans?

PERSONAL CONSIDERATIONS

• How well do you adjust to new situations?
• Would you prefer studying with other Americans, students from the host country, or a combination of both?
• Do you want to study abroad in the context of a “program” where housing, meals, and administrative arrangements are taken care of for you, or would you prefer to make all these arrangements on your own?
• Will the program providers put you in touch with alumni to learn more about the program?
