Using Your Experience

Are you looking for opportunities to share your Study Abroad experiences with others? We know you’ve learned some fabulous things about cultures, academics, languages, internships, volunteering, and exploring while abroad, and we hope you would like to share them!

Opportunities to be involved in the International Community at TCU:

  • VISA Corps, Veteran International Student Ambassador Program: A select number of outstanding study abroad alumni will be chosen each year to assist with promoting study abroad in a variety of ways.
  • Phi Beta Delta , the international honor society: If you are a junior or senior with a high GPA, you may be eligible for this prestigious national honor society.
  • ISA, International Student Association:One of the most popular and active groups on campus, this group of American and international students meets weekly to learn more about world cultures and socialize with one another.
  • Conversation Partners (e-mail iep@tcu.edu): If you’ve studied a foreign language, you know how hard it can be! Help students in the Intensive English Program practice English, and do some fun activities together in the meantime. 

Using your experience professionally:

How can you market yourself using your study abroad experience?  What opportunities are available to continue in an international field?  Below is some information on integrating your international experience in the job search

Job Searching --Consider a variety of career paths, such as:

  • Teaching
  • Translating and interpreting
  • Government
  • Education administration
  • Business, industry, and commerce
  • Public service

Resume-Writing:

  • Include the name of the foreign university or program under your Education section
  • Include languages spoken and proficiency level, as well as international competencies, under your Skills section
  • Include study abroad or international educational experience under your Honors / Awards / Recognitions section

Define the qualities reinforced by the study abroad experience and how they are applicable to the job, such as:

  • Dedication to a project / goal
  • Perseverance in attaining goals
  • Creative thinking skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Adaptation skills
  • Broadened view of self / world

Describe specific goals attained:

  • Competency / fluency of another language
  • Understanding of a different culture
  • Independence
  • Travel opportunities
